“Eucalyptus” é o terceiro single que o The National apresenta de seu novo álbum, First Two Pages of Frankenstein. O videoclipe foi dirigido e editado por Chris Sgroi e produzido por Skirmish, e mescla imagens em preto e branco da banda em estúdio, imagens coloridas fora dele, observando uma paisagem coberta pela neve, e durante apresentação.
Anteriormente, a bandahavia apresentado outras duas faixas do novo trabalho: “Tropic Morning News” quando deu detalhes sobre o novo álbum e “New Order T-Shirt”.
A nova canção (LETRA AO FINAL) surgiu de uma forma curiosa, o guitarrista Bryce Dessner enviou a música para o vocalista Matt Berninger um tempo atrás e tinha esquecido dela. Muito mais tarde, Berninger escreveu a letra e eles trabalharam durante uma passagem de som em um show no Capitol Theatre, em Port Chester.
Dessner comentou sobre a forma espontânea como a canção acabou surgindo: “Nós ensaiamos duas vezes sem nunca ter feito uma demo e tocamos para o público naquela noite, e o que você ouve no álbum foi parcialmente gravado durante aquela apresentação… Tem uma sensação crua e imediata, e fazia sentido deixar as arestas em vez de tentar aperfeiçoá-las”.
Berninger comentou sobre o significado da letra : “Ao longo do álbum, há muito olhar para o abismo e se perguntar se um relacionamento chegou ao fim. ‘Eucalyptus’ é sobre um casal dividindo suas posses depois de um rompimento – como, ‘O que vamos fazer com a água da nascente que recebemos, o que vai acontecer com todas essas plantas?’ É sobre todas aquelas pequenas coisas que você acaba tendo que pensar quando se torna tão conectado a alguém”.
